fundamental duties

Rights, as said are the most crucial aspect of human society, without which no man can get equal status and opportunities in any field of life. Thus we have been granted a considerable number of rights by our constitution that has improved the way of living.
It is evident that we all are well aware of our rights and are ready to fight for justice. But we do forget that besides our fundamental rights, we also have fundamental duties that our constitution calls upon us to perform. Freedom does not come for free after all!! How many of us have come across situations when public property is being destroyed as an expression of anger by the public themselves and we coolly say that this is common in India? But why do we forget that safeguarding public property and giving up violence is one of our fundamental duties??
The question which is foremost in my mind is that WHY are we always ready to draw our swords at the drop of the hat? And even so when our constitution asks us to develop a scientific temper, humanism and a spirit of inquiry and reform!
One of our very important duties is to renounce practices derogatory to the dignity of women and children, but the increasing number of crimes against them and the antipathetic attitude towards the victims, speaks an altogether different story.
No action taken against the culprits having a strong family background or holding a high post is rather encouraging them to commit more of such crimes. As it is said ‘justice delayed is justice denied’ the number of years taken to provide justice to the victims just adds to their woes.
The government has made traffic rules for our own convenience. But we, instead of following them, we tend to flout the rules for the sake of reaching our destinations as soon as possible.
When hauled up by the constables, instead of apologizing, many of us tend to bully them by the traditional statement of “do you know who I am?” We leave no stone unturned in acquiring or fighting for our ‘Rights’ but why does this enthusiasm somewhat diminishes when the subject of our ‘duties’ come up? Why do we forget that rights and duties are the sides of the same coin and go hand in hand? We all are the citizens of India. No matter what post we hold, the law of our country places us as being “equal”.  We have to get over this “you know who I am” attitude and follow the traffic rules when everyone else is following.

Why can’t we raise our voices when public properties are destroyed before our very own eyes? After all, it is our nation and we have to bring positive changes here. Being youngsters we should be even more particular about our duties. If we are the future, we have to be aware to be bright. Think over it!

    1. I must say that if you were to become someone who was politically involved, i am very sure that it would do some good to our country. You have been absolutely correct when you posted the following question,"Why can’t we raise our voices when public properties are destroyed before our very own eyes" ? This shows the fundamentalist and communist attitudes that exist among people. When it comes to duty , the people act as hypocrites. Its quite true that fundamental rights today are just documented norms in a museum because the citizens are either not concerned or afraid to enact them. As you say that having fundamental rights alone is not enough, since there are also associated duties that come along with them. In short the article is an effective message in simple examples. *claps*

  4. It is passionately written.. That much is evident.. There are a lot of thought provoking points here..
You're right in observing that people enjoy their rights too much and conduct their duties too little...

Although it is well written, you've made the mistake of generalizations.. To every answer, there are exceptions.. Please keep that in mind.. :) :)

All in all, Me likey.. Wonderful job.. :)

  5. raagini- yes the examples given were those which we see in our daily lives and chose to ignore. i wrote what i had seen and felt. i cannot say much about being politically associated because at some point we all slack in doing our duties, but yes i'll agree when you say that open minded and responsible people are the ones who should come forward to bring about the necessary changes in our country.

  6. nicely written meghna. I agree that written fundamental rights alone are not enough . one should also make efforts and should have the courage to enact them in the society. You have given some good examples.

  8. You have made very valid points and quite accurate in nature.
Its high time since some solutions are offered and duties are abided by all instead of a chosen few. Hope its done immediately without delay. How many more eye openers do we require to right the wrongs?
Your article has once again opened up old wounds. Very well written Meghna. The topic although seems to be repeated also seems inevitable cause nothing seemed to have changed. And it should be mentioned time and again till everyone of us makes the change.

  9. well written meghna. you have given all valid points which has now become totally invalid in this country. But the questions u have asked like "why aren't we raising our voices against the destruction of the public property?" doesn't really get into our heads. We Indians just read the article, think about doing something but end up doing nothing. I really appreciate the emotions that you have put in writing this article. If all the people of this country put in the same passion in improving the condition of this country and fulfilling their duties in the right way then one day we would definitely say- "I am proud to be an Indian".
